ANSWERS TO SUNSTAR ZUP INTERVIEW

Describe yourself as a student.

My life as student was spent on juggling multiple responsibilities as a responsible student, as a dynamic servant leader in various organizations, as a courageous founder of two student organizations, as a good son to my parents, and as a caring buddy to my friends.

Although I had to juggle a lot of responsibilities, I say that my student life was fun and worthwhile because I loved what I do and I placed my heart in anything I do. I always gave my best. I made sure that my outputs were of good form and substance.

I also dared to fail and took calculated risks when I was a student. Although I encountered failures at some points of my college life, I never gave up. I used my failures as building blocks for success and as my inspiration to achieve greater heights.

Describe your first year in college.

I was a very simple and silent student in my freshman years in college. Although I am a probinsyano who hails from Baybay, Leyte, I did my best to cope up with the bustling city life. I also had a hard time adjusting to the new culture, new environment and new people. Although some of my classmates had weird faces on me, I did my best to prove to them that a probinsyano like me can make waves in USC.

When I was a freshman, my top priority was my academic performance. I spent many hours in the USC library, in the Thinking Bulb Study Center, and in the USC Main Chapel. I really exerted great efforts for my studies and made sure that I do good both in my major and minor subjects.

Second to academics was my extra and co curricular participation in various organizations. I engaged myself in activities in the school organizations wherein I was affiliated like Student Power Party (SPP), Alyansa sa mga Bisaya nga nia sa Sugbo (ABS-USC), Student for Progress Organization (SPO-USC), and the Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (USC-JPIA). I also continued my dynamism for my other organizations like SK, Immaculate Conception Parish Altar Servers (ICPAS) and Commission on Youth (COY), and Columbian Squires 1393. My passion to serve in various organizations was strengthened with the guidance and help of my best adviser, Mrs. Ma. Luisa J. Cane.

Third priority was the time I spent with myself, family, and friends. I remembered before that I enjoyed strolling in the mall, visiting different churches in Cebu especially the Shrine of the Our Lady of Regla in Lapu-Lapu City, and watching movies with people close to my heart.

How did you manage your time in college?

During college, I had lots of responsibilities to juggle. It was not that easy to manage my time. At first, it was hard. But the moment you learn how to do effective and efficient time management, everything will run smoothly. So, how do you do that? You need to set and choose priorities, have an organizer or planner, make a good schedule or timetable of activities, and make wise decisions.

What are your tips for effective studying to the incoming college freshmen?

3D Tips.

Develop a good study habit. Read and study everyday. Be sure that you come to class geared for battle. Listen to the discussions and take good notes. After the day, check on your notes. Read them and don’t let the rats feast on them. Practice solving and do it all over again until you learn the art. Do research if you need to. Then read in advance. Continue the cycle and you will surely graduate with flying colors.

Do it today. Do assignments, projects, and requirements as soon as possible. Do it today. Do not wait for another day. Give your best and don’t settle for less. Submit them on time and you’ll get a line of one in your grades.

Do have time to relax and play. All work and no play make Juan a dull boy. Familiar? Yes it is true. Have time to chill on weekends but not too much. Spend time with the family and friends in wholesome and fun activities. Have enough rest as well after the play.

How did you balance the different aspects of life --spiritual, financial, family, academics, health, and love life-- during college?

Seek ye first the kingdom of God and everything will fall into place.

As a person, we have a lot of roles to play – a Christian, a son, a student, a friend and a lover. Balancing the different aspects of life might not be that easy. But if we believe in God, do our respective roles with a loving heart and if we spend time to share, care, and learn, by then everything will be possible.

How should the incoming college freshmen balance academics and extra co-curricular activities?

Life is what you make it. Life is a matter of choice. Balancing academics and extra-curricular activities is a matter of setting priorities, making wise choices and decisions, and coming up with an effective and efficient time management scheme.

What youth events and organizations should they watch out for and join?

There are various organizations around to watch out for – academic, co-curricular, extra-curricular, spiritual, community oriented. For me, the youth should affiliate in organizations wherein their passion lies. I do believe that “Where your passion is, your heart is.”

How can they have confidence in themselves and excel among others?

Elevate the valley of strengths. Narrow down the mountain of weaknesses.

Dare to fail. Do not be disheartened by any failure as long as you have done your very best. After all it’s not a matter of how deep you fall but what matters most is that you rise each time you fall.

What motto should they keep in mind?

Life is beautiful…life is handsome… and so am I.

*Feel free to add anything related to the subject.

You will never taste the victory of success unless you taste the bitterness of failure.

Don’t be afraid to fail. Dare to fail! Do not be disheartened by any failure as long as you have done your very best. After all it’s not a matter of how deep you fall but what matters most is that you rise each time you fall.

Thank you =)

All the best,
